Widespread Panic delivered the second concert in their five-night residency at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Friday. The show featured two sets full of original and cover favorites as well as an encore that saw the band offering “Give” for the first time in over a year and closing with a Guess Who classic.
Panic got the first set underway with a four-song seamless segment that began with “From The Cradle” followed by the vintage favorite “Pleas.” Keyboardist JoJo Hermann offer somepiano stylings ahead of leading the group through “One Arm Steve” before WSP capped off the sequence with Robert Johnson’s “Stop Breakin Down Blues.” The band’s cover of Bloodkin’s “Can’t Get High” came next.
“I’m Not Alone” and “There Is Time” followed ahead of the classic “Holden Oversoul,” which saw guitarist Jimmy Herring shredding. Bassist Dave Schools then led the way through the late Vic Chesnutt’s “Sleeping Man” to conclude the first frame.
The Ain’t Life Grand opener “Little Kin” kicked off the second set and from there the band headed into “Action Man.” “Better Off” then proceeded another four-song seamless affair beginning with “Jack,” which saw Herring nodding to his former group and Beacon residency legends The Allman Brothers Band with a tease of “Blue Sky.”
From there the band flowed into the favorite “Love Tractor” after which they stretched their legs out on a jam before heading into Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West,” the latter boasting a bass solo from Schools as the Beacon flooded with green and red light signaling “Stop-Go.” Frontman John Bell then channeled Leonard Cohen on a “That Don’t Make It Junk” rap during “Stop-Go” to seal the seamless section. Neil Young’s “Walk On” which contained a “Turn On Your Lovelight” jam, followed before WSP wrapped up the second set with “Imitation Leather Shoes.”
Panic returned to deliver a three-song encore that began with the vintage “Gimme” before the band dusted off “Give,” last time played on June 25, 2021, as per PanicStream. Widespread Panic capped off the concert with the cover favorite, “No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature” by the Guess Who.
